Our first stop was Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Its dramatic landscapes span the National Park. We saw some wonderful landscapes of rock formations, steep canyons and tall spires. We were able to see bighorn sheep and prairie dogs. Bison live there too but I didn't see one there. Here are a few pictures of our time there today.
Next stop the town of Wall, SD home of Wall Drug famous for their FREE ice water! We ate lunch here and then shopped at some of the quaint shops and some fun photo ops!
After lunch we headed to Custer State Park! We checked into The State Game Lodge a gracious native stone and wood lodge built in 1920 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It served as the “Summer White House” for President Calvin Coolidge in 1927 and was visited by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953. And the Grace Coolidge Creek still serenely winds through the valley today.
After checking in and getting to our room to rest a bit we headed out on jeeps to look for wildlife and to attend a chuck wagon cookout! We saw Bison, deer, prong horn antelope, wild donkeys, mule and white tail deer and turkeys!
Sunset at Custer State Park!
What wonderful day. We stay here at Custer State Park for two nights. Tomorrow we are off to the Mammoth Site and then Crazy Horse!
Stay tunned....
