Crazy 8 – Day 7: Old Cars, the Quiet Side & More Ice Cream!

Day 7 started with another beautiful blue-sky Maine morning, and our first stop was the Seal Cove Auto Museum.

They were not even open but never fear pictures were taken! Sitting outside was a beautiful 1941 Pontiac “Woody,” with its wood-paneled body, whitewall tires and all that chrome. It certainly looked like it belonged right where it was.

Of course, with this group, an automobile museum was bound to be a hit — especially with the guys! πŸ˜‚ There were all kinds of wonderful old automobiles to see, and it was a fun way to start our morning.

After getting to see what we could of old cars, we climbed back into our considerably newer ones πŸ˜‚ and headed toward Bass Harbor to explore more of what they call the “Quiet Side” of Mount Desert Island.

We made our way down to Bass Harbor, enjoying the scenery along the way. It really does have a different feel from busy Bar Harbor — quieter, more laid-back and very much the coastal Maine you picture in your mind.

At Bass Harbor Head Light, cameras were definitely getting a workout!

We all took plenty of pictures, and Michael even started down the rocky path, although he didn't make it as far as David.  And if you know David, you know he's going to do whatever he can to get the best picture possible. He kept working his way down until he found the angle he wanted, and judging by the pictures he came back with,  his determination paid off. He captured some beautiful shots of the lighthouse tucked among the trees against that gorgeous blue Maine sky. πŸ“·

I think we've all learned on all of our trips together that when David heads off somewhere with that camera, just let him go — there will probably be a really good picture coming back! πŸ˜‚

And here are a few more of our photos from Bass Harbor Head Light — everyone had a phone out trying to capture just how beautiful it was. ❤️πŸ“·

BREAKING NEWS from Maine: Wayne has taken off the puffy coat! πŸ˜‚☀️

There were a lot of people braver than me willing to go down those stairs and walk around on the rocks for the views. Michael got these pictures while he was down there.

As we were driving through, we had noticed an old firetruck outside the Tremont Fire Department, and you know there was no way we were going to let that go! πŸ˜‚ After our stop at Bass Harbor, we went back so we could get a closer look and take some pictures of the old red Engine 1. With a retired battalion fire chief traveling in our car, old fire equipment tends to get noticed!

From there, we headed into Southwest Harbor, where it was time to do a little shopping. We wandered in and out of the little shops along Main Street, including Sawyer's Specialties, Acadia Quietside Shop, Pure Maine, Salt Shop and Harbor Artisans. There was plenty to look at, and we certainly took our time doing it.

Peep Wayne taking a rest while we shopped!

Eventually all that shopping made us hungry, so we stopped for lunch at CafΓ© Drydock & Inn. There was certainly something for everyone on the menu — lobster rolls, salads, burgers, sandwiches, tacos, pasta and more — but Michael decided that if he was in Maine, he was going to do it right.

He ordered the whole lobster! 🦞

They even brought him a lobster bib, so naturally a picture was required before he dug in. You can't come all the way to Maine, put on a lobster bib and expect us not to take your picture! πŸ˜‚

Freida got the Lobster Puff and a cup of Clam Chowder

Wayne had the Lobster Roll

Susan had Annie's Pasta

Mark got the Fish Tacos

David got the Dry Dock Burger

Grace chose the BLTT Hoagie that had Turkey on it too

I was the boring one....Caesar Salad

While we were eating, everyone kept telling me there was a deer in the alley behind me. Of course, I figured by the time I turned around it would be gone, but there it was! I managed to get a picture of it standing beneath a big American flag. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ¦Œ Just one of those unexpected little moments you couldn't plan if you tried. If only he would have looked at me and smiled.

After lunch, we wandered back outside to look at the beautiful cosmos we had noticed along the street. I was busy taking pictures of them — and trying unsuccessfully to catch a hummingbird that was flitting around among the flowers. Apparently he wasn't interested in being part of the Crazy 8 blog! πŸ˜‚

David was taking pictures of the flowers too, and later I saw his— his flower pictures turned out absolutely beautiful! The hummingbird may not have cooperated, but at least the cosmos knew how to pose. 🌸

We finally started making our way back toward the car, but you know how that goes — we spotted one more shop, so of course we had to go in! πŸ˜‚

We stopped at Tom Cat Tide and wandered around for a bit. I found a magnet that made me laugh: But I didn't buy it. 🀣

Let's just say…I immediately thought of a few people back home who would appreciate that one. πŸ˜‚

From there, we continued our shopping, stopping at some antique, vintage and collectibles shops along the way. These were the fun kind of places where things spilled right out into the yard and you never knew what you might find next. One even had an old rusty International truck out front with Antiques & Collectibles” on the side — probably the best advertisement they could have had!

Apparently shopping requires periodic rest stops. πŸ˜‚

Wayne and Freida even found themselves a comfortable spot among all the treasures. I'm not sure whether they were shopping or just testing the merchandise, but they certainly looked right at home!

And then — because apparently no Crazy 8 travel day is complete without it — we found ice cream again! πŸ˜‚πŸ¦

This time we stopped at Maple & Cream in Ellsworth, a cute little gelato and coffee stand. We found a shady picnic table and settled in with our treats. Grace decided to try an affogato, which is gelato with a shot of hot espresso poured over it, while the rest of us enjoyed our different flavors.

But while the rest of us were concentrating on our gelato, Michael found something else that caught his attention.

A tree. πŸ˜‚

And not just any tree. This thing was enormous!

He spotted the huge old tree beside where we were sitting and immediately became fascinated with how old it might be. He went over to investigate, and of course I had to take his picture standing beside it just to show how massive that trunk really was.

We still don't know how old the tree is, but Michael seemed determined to find out. Apparently even an ice cream stop can turn into a research project when you're traveling with us! πŸ˜‚

After our gelato stop, we started making our way back toward our home away from home, but we had one more practical stop to make — gas! We filled up the cars tonight so we will be ready to hit the road in the morning without having to worry about it.

Tonight is our last night in our Maine house

It has been such a nice home base for the eight of us while we've been exploring this part of Maine, but our trip isn't over yet!

Today we'll pack everything back into the cars, pull out with full tanks and head off for another day of adventures as the Crazy 8 begin making our way toward home.

Day 7 is in the books…and the Crazy 8 aren't finished yet! πŸ˜‚πŸš—❤️

It seems you are finding both tourist and native places to get a real experience in Maine.
